Second Round of Snow Brings Few Outages; Cold Temps

We experienced reported only single outage affecting 40 consumers along Belangia Road in the Adams Creek area of Havelock this morning Jan. 18). Crews had to repair a span of power line that was taken down by a tree.

While CCEC’s system fared well during this second round of wintry weather, the below-freezing temperatures are again going to have an impact on heating bills. The state saw a record 200 consecutive hours of below freezing temperatures earlier this month. The previous record was 152 hours in 1982.

Most homes in our area are heated with heat pump systems. These systems lose efficiency when temperatures drop below freezing and they switch to “auxiliary” or “emergency” heat mode. Under normal conditions, the cost of running a heating system is about 30-35 cents per hour. When using auxiliary heat it goes up to about $1.30 an hour.

“We can’t change the weather, but we do want our members be aware of the impact of cold temperatures,” said CCEC Communications Director Lisa Galizia. “To avoid paying a high bill all at once, we recommend members put some money toward their bill before it is due.”

Members can do that through PowerPay24 online ( or by downloading the PowerPay24 app for smart phones or tablets.

Co-op members can find more ways to cut their energy use at They can also call CCEC at (252) 247-3107 to request a free energy audit.
